Genevieve and Stephen Hathaway. Sunbeams Private Kindergarten.

From the Beginning…

First it was just a dream, next a possibility, and now, after lots of research and planning, finally a reality!

In July 2012, after teaching for over 20 years in a variety of roles and in both public and private early childhood establishments, I decided that the time was right to create my own centre, and put all my years of experience and ideas into a very special place. My husband Stephen shared my dream, and right from the beginning has believed in the vision for our kindergarten.

We found the perfect property in Western Springs, which was in our desired location and was just the right size for our project. Shortly afterwards we purchased a 100 year old bay front villa and eventually relocated it onto our site.

My vision was to create a sanctuary specifically designed for young children that is beautiful, cosy and welcoming. A calm and nurturing environment with carefully chosen caring and dedicated teachers.

High teacher/ child ratios to enable opportunities for individual and small group work, in depth enquiry projects and focus groups.

I wanted to create a very special place for young children. A place rich in opportunities for learning in all areas of the curriculum. Where they can gain confidence in their abilities, develop respectful relationships and social skills, to experiment, make discoveries and awaken their imagination.

We believe we are fulfilling our dream of creating a child’s sanctuary, a special place of learning in a beautiful environment,  with passionate, experienced facilitators, quality resources and a dedicated management team.

This kindergarten has been created with love by two people who have always believed in the dream.

Our Team

Genevieve Hathaway – Managing Director/Teacher

Ever since I can remember I have always wanted to be a teacher. Becoming a qualified kindergarten teacher and gaining my first teaching position, was just the beginning. I have been on an amazing journey over the years, working in different early childhood settings and learning so much along the way. Teaching children respect for people and the world in which we live, is the core of my philosophy. Children deserve our respect, they deserve energetic, passionate teachers and a quality learning environment. I believe in providing excellence in education for our young children to enable them to become confident, capable, enthusiastic learners who are well prepared for the next stage in their learning journey.

Stephanie Whittaker – Teacher

I was welcomed into the Sunbeams family in Term 2, April 2015.

I hold a Bachelor of Teaching – Early Childhood Education from the University of Waikato. I am an experienced teacher, having taught both kindergarten and primary school aged children for over 10 years within New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Briar Edgerley-Williams – Teacher

I am a qualified and registered teacher with a Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood and Primary education, and I have experience working in a variety of different roles within the early childhood sector.

As a teacher I feel very privileged to work alongside children each day and I really value their imagination, creativity and curiosity. I believe children should always feel encouraged and empowered in their learning, with a strong sense of self identity and self confidence. I am very excited to become part of the Sunbeams team and I look forward to sharing many wonderful learning experiences with the children!

Joyanne Lovatt – Teacher

Hi, I joined the teaching team at Sunbeams Kindergarten as a part-time teacher in 2016. I have a Diploma in Early Childhood and have been involved in this sector for over 30 years.

I have worked across a variety of early childhood settings and bring to the team a range of skills and experiences I have learnt along my journey, as a teacher, volunteer with a variety of organisations and as a mother of three (now adult) children.

I continue to feel passionate about my chosen career path and take delight in the wonder and awe of childhood, the pleasure in the “small things” of life, and the myriad of opportunities for growth and learning that early childhood brings.

Alexandra Hathaway – Teachers’ Assistant

I am an enthusiastic, fun and nurturing person and love spending time with children and sharing special moments.

have been a nanny and am also working in children’s retail. During my time as a nanny I developed warm relationships with the children and became a part of the family. It is important to me to build and nurture relationships, be a great communicator and a positive role model.

Philosophy

At Sunbeams Private Kindergarten we have created a unique, homely and peaceful haven for children where we cherish beauty and aesthetic harmony within our surroundings. Our children and whanau are warmly welcomed each day where they discover an environment rich in learning opportunities and challenges. We value the essential role of play in the young child’s pathway to learning and foster children’s exploration, risk taking, creativity, curiosity, joy and wonder.

The New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whariki is the foundation on which our teaching and learning philosophy is based.  This curriculum is founded on the following aspirations for children:

”to grow up as competent and confident learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body and spirit, secure in the sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society”.

Our team honours every child as a unique individual, who brings their specific skills, knowledge, developing dispositions, urges and cultural heritage.  We nurture a culture of kindness, love and respect for others, enabling children to learn in a physically and emotionally safe place. Teachers develop trust and form reciprocal and responsive relationships with open, honest communication, by listening, acknowledging and appreciating children, families and colleagues.

We treasure our partnership with parents, whanau and the wider kindergarten community.  Teachers acknowledge and respect families aspirations for their children and we encourage their contributions within our programme.

Teachers recognise the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi, fostering an environment where children will experience the values, traditions and language of the bi-cultural heritage of Aotearoa. We acknowledge and celebrate cultural diversity within our community, and value the opportunities that enable us to learn about different people, their beliefs and way of life.

The teaching team share a passion for inspiring young minds through our dedication to excellence in teaching.  We believe life is a learning journey and are committed to ongoing reflection, evaluation, self review and professional development.

Our Programme

Our focus is on providing excellent childcare with the best educational resources, experienced teachers and a beautiful environment to challenge and stimulate your child. We believe children learn through play, by being emersed in an environment which is rich in opportunities for learning, experimenting and making discoveries.

As teachers we have a role of facilitator, guide and supporter. We believe it is our role to empower children, to foster their efforts and celebrate their contributions.

By giving children responsibility for their own work, and supporting their efforts along the way, we are building children’s self esteem, confidence and belief in their abilities.

At Sunbeams Kindergarten we are guided by the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum Te Whariki.

Through a process of assessment, planning and evaluation and information sharing with parents and whanau, we are able to implement a collaborative learning programme that is in depth and relevant.

Our programme is specially designed for 2 to 6 year olds and caters for their different stages of development.

We provide a stimulating, challenging, well resourced environment for learning in all areas of the curriculum.

Maths, Language, Science, Arts, Social Science, Technology and Health.

At Sunbeams Kindergarten we offer an extension programme for our children over 4 years old.

This includes opportunities for:

  • In depth enquiry, including research.
  • Long term art projects.
  • Literacy in early childhood: extending and developing skills.
  • Maths in early childhood: extending and developing skills.
  • In depth exploration: science and the world around us.
  • Transition to school skills.

Sessions and Fees

The daily hours are  8.30am to 2.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Children attend a minimum of two days per week.

In our experience we have found that children settle more quickly, learn the routines and boundaries, become familiar with their new environment and form relationships with children and teachers, when there is regular and frequent attendance.
